Frederick Norman Cook

1930 United States Federal Census Washington Pierce Tacoma District 146 (Ancestry 28 of 33)
Living at 1112 38th Street, Tacoma, Washington.

Frederick N. Cook's wife, Isabelle, maiden name was Norton. They were married twice to each other. (I guess they solved their first batch of martial challenges, and re-married.) Fred and Isabelle had one daughter, by the name of Phylis.

She married John Forrester Sr. and divorced. Phylis and John (Jack), had a son and a daughter;
John Forrester Jr. and daughter, Katherine (Katie) Forrester.

John (Jack) Forrester Sr is now deceased (died from cancer, I believe). John Forrester Jr. is also deceased. (I believe, he didn't marry.) John, Jr. was a Vietnam Veteran. Katherine (?) or, as I always knew her, Katie, also married, had children and divorced.

The family is not sure if Phylis is still alive. ( Phylis and I believe Katie and her children, lived with Isabelle and Fred till both their deaths. Then they continued to live there (still, could be), after Fred and Isabelle died. Fred and Isabelle Cook's last address was 4518 South 9th Street in Tacoma. This was the house they lived in, as I visited them as a child.

Frederick Cook, worked for Schoenfeld's Furniture until his retirement. I remember him selling furniture for Schoenfelds, when he was in his early seventies and beyond. Fred was very well kept and never looked his age. He was always cordial and extremely pleasant to be around. Isabelle was too. She was the "story keeper" of that family...I should have listened more closely when I was a kid!!

I know Isabelle had a sister (Ruby) and a brother, that both lived in the Tacoma area. Her brother's wife (her name escapes me), was a care giver for my Grandmother, Virginia C. Lee, right before she died. I am sure, she has passed also..she was older in age when she provided care for Virginia.

I believe, Ruby married and divorced. I think she had children, but, I am not sure.

I know Frederick Cook, and Fred Gifford (worked as a janitor) and my Grandmother Amy as a young girl (Elevator Operator or "Jockey" as they were known in that day) all worked in the California Building. This building was torn down to build a new Woolworth's store (building is still standing) in Tacoma on Broadway. The California building was also the location (here's that "two degrees" of separation" thing going-) of Doctor Annie E. Reynolds general practice.
Doctor Annie E. Reynolds (Virgina C. (Reynolds) Lee's Aunt) was one of the first women doctors who tried a private practice in the late 1910 & early 1920's era. Of course, the practice was rough at the time...not many men would see a "women doctor" or allow their family to see one either. So, Dr. Reynolds, went to work for a "women's group" that offered life insurance to it's members. And of course, to get life insurance at the time, you needed a physical. She traveled all over the United States as she worked giving physicals and made a very good living.

Also, Raymond B. Turner's wife Helen, worked in the California Bldg. when she was young and before meeting Ray. I believe she worked as an office employee (aka as a secretary) during this time.
Enough of this novel.....

The California Block, built in 1889, was located in the 1110-16 Pacific Avenue area of downtown Tacoma. Over the years the building, first known as the Wilson Building, would contain many local businesses. Arthur French, listed as photographer and crayon artist in the 1892 City Directory, both lived and worked in the California Building. He took the above photograph ca. 1890 of the solid Romaneque structure. Built of either stone or brick, there was heavy use of the semi-circular Roman arch. By 1892, occupants included French, the Merrick Bros. clothing and shoe store, St. John's Pharmacy, I.J. Sharick jewelers, and Fidelity Rent & Collection Co.
