Grace married Harm Julius. Meine married Hauko Sleper. Harm and Grace Kuper Julius settled in Ortonville, Big Stone, Minnesota. On 17 Jan 1941, Harm Julius came home and with a three-clawed hammer bashed in the head of Jenjie Groen ( Jennie Kuper) then killed his wife Grace Kuper Julius and then her niece Jennie Sleper, d/o Hauko and Meine Kuper Sleper. He set the house on fire and then went into the basement and hung himself..

Herman M. Magnuson

Herman M. Magnuson, Coach Herman M. Magnuson passed away at his home Sunday, March 24, 2002, surrounded by his family. Herman was born in Akra, North Dakota on October 23, 1939 to Magnus and Freida Magnuson. Herman was a Tacoma resident for over 60 years. He graduated from the University of Puget Sound, earning a Bachelor degree in Education, and received a Master degree in Education from Oregon State University. Herman dedicated his career to motivating and creating hope in his students, not only in sports and education, but to their goals in life. His competitive attitude inspired students to reach beyond their limits. Herman loved life and taught his students, family, friends and everyone he came in contact with to do the same. Herman is survived by his wife, Katherine; his sister, Sylvia Sass of Fircrest; his brother, Oliver Magnuson and sister-in-law, Marie of Forest Beach; his brother-in- law,Harry F. Gifford; his daughter, Barbara and son-in-law, Garry Green of Spanaway; his son, James Magnuson and daughter-in-law, Kim; his son, Jeffrey Magnuson of Federal Way; eight grandchildren, one great-grand- child and his special dog, Misty. There will be a memorial service at his beloved school that he taught at twenty-four years, Baker Middle School on April 6, 2002 at 1:00 PM in the gym. Katherine Lillian Magnuson Born in Tacoma, WA on Apr. 18, 1940 Departed on Dec. 31, 2004 and resided in Tacoma, WA.

Kay passed away on December 31, 2004 at home in Tacoma surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by husband Herman Magnuson (her soul mate), parents Harry and Erma Gifford, and sister Jean Pelletier. Kay is survived by bother, Harry Gifford of Tacoma; daughter Barbara Green, (Garry) Scottsdale, AZ, son, James Magnuson, (Kim) Renton and son, Jeff Magnuson, Federal Way, nieces (Theresa, Mary, Troy and Erin) in-laws (Oliver, Marie and Sylvia). She was blessed with grandchildren (Tabetha, Garry, Katy, Joe, Jeff, Jamie, Jacob, Natasha) and great grandchildren (Annabelle and Brandon) along with many other loving family members and friends. Kay was born and grew up in Tacoma, WA, graduating from Pacific Lutheran University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, Cum Laude. Kay retired from Brown’s Point Elementary in 1999, where she enjoyed teaching 1, 300 kindergarten students over her 27 year career. Kay’s success as an educator is celebrated in the successful lives of countless former students. Kay’s goal in life was caring for others. Her main focus was always her family. Kay wrote “let it be known that I love you all…my love will never fade over time…please remember to keep the family tradition alive…be the new story tellers, there is a lot to tell?” She wished for us to stay a family unit. She was our matriarch (a woman highly respected by her family and to one whom turns for guidance and support), the head of our clan. The Magnuson home was always open to family and friends. Her touch extended far beyond her immediate family. Kay’s compassion and willingness to help other was the center of her spirit. No one could ever replace her, she was the guiding light of our family. Viewing will be from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM on Wednesday, January 5 and Thursday, January 6, 2005. Memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, January 7, 2005 in the Mt. View Celebration of Life Center.

Lieutenant Colonel Retired Us Army James J. Pelletier

James J. Pelletier James J. Pelletier, 88, died April 13, 2001 at home. He retired from the US Army in 1960 as a Lieutenant Colonel. After retiring, he went to work for the Boeing Company and retired for the second time after more than 10 years at the company. James was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Retired Officer’s Association and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. James is survived by daughters Mary Howell, Tacoma; Theresa Rawlinson and husband Robert, Hardin, TX; brother-in-law Harry Gifford and wife Corrinne, sister- in-law Kay Magnuson and husband Herman, a special caregiver Pauline Severson, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, April 17, 2001, 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited Monday, April 16, 2001, 5:00 p.m. at the 1002 S. Yakima Avenue Chapel. Viewing will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday April 15, 2001 and Monday, April 16, 2001 at the funeral home. Interment at Gethsemane Catholic Cemetery. Lloyd J. Sass

Lloyd J. Sass Died peacefully and was re-turned to our Lord on August 5, 2002. Born August 4, 1917 to Henry and Jenny Sass in Roseland, NE, and raised in a family of eight children. He served as a flight instructor in the US Air Force and attended Gonzaga University. He began his career as an optician in Spokane, WA, and went on to own and operate Columbian Opticians, a chain of seven retail stores in Washington and Oregon. He spearheaded legislative efforts to mandate the licensing of opticians, and was issued the 1st optician’s license in Washington State in 1956. He married Sylvia Magnuson in 1951, with whom he raised four children. His lifelong interest and love of flying contributed to his commitment to the development of the Tacoma Industrial Airport. He was a member of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, Tacoma Elks, Lakewood Kiwanis and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. He served on many advisory and educational boards, which represented his interest in local business and community issues. He lived a full and active life with family and friends. His many interests included flying his seaplane, salmon fishing, hunting, telling jokes, golfing and tending his rose gardens. He had a generous heart, strong spirit, unique sense of humor and the ability to inspire others. He is survived by four children, Marlo Fyfe (Malcom) of Pinole, CA; Laurie Rossman (Dean) of Fircrest, WA; Paul Sass (Marianne) of Lakewood, WA; and Donna Sass of Tacoma, WA. He was blessed with six grandchildren, all of whom he cherished and who brought him great joy. A special appreciation is extend- ed to all the employees and colleagues who contributed to the growth, success and enjoyment of a long career.
