Joseph Ernst Errington

"Vivian Turner On December 31, 2003, Vivian Turner made her final transition to glory and is now singing with the angels in a very holy place. Vivian and her twin brother, Donald, were born to Joseph and Anna Errington on February 14, 1911, in Spokane County, WA. Following the death of her brother in infancy, and her mother when Vivian was six, she and her younger sister, Fay, grew up in various foster homes all over northern California. As a teenager, Vivian moved to Tacoma to live with relatives and graduated from Lincoln High School. She then went on to attend practical nursing training at St. Joseph’s Hospital, also in Tacoma. On August 14, 1936, Vivian married Ben Turner, becoming part of an early pioneer family in the Tacoma Area. In 1946 their daughter, Marla, was born. Vivian was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ben, in 1993, her sister, mother, father and twin brother. She is survived by daughter, Marla McCombie, in Missoula, Montana; granddaughter, Kendra McCombie Powers and husband, Ken, of Tacoma; grandson, Devin McCombie and wife, Lisa, of Medford, Massachusetts; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, at Fir Lane Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Spanaway, Washington. We miss you mom ... you will be in our hearts and memories forever. The strength, love and good humor you shared will help us to carry on."

Research Notes from Stan R. Lee (September 16, 2004):
I spent most of this afternoon in the Northwest Library at the Tacoma Public Library. I verified, with the help of Tacoma City Directories, that Fred was married four times.
The first listing for Frederick was in 1903 and he lived at 613 N. M Street.
1904 home listed at 6228 Hood, South Tacoma. Occupation was "hlpr G.W. Co."
1905 same address as above. Occupation listed as "Lab ND Shops"
1906 home listed as 1405 South Yakima. Occupation listed as janitor; Fidelity Bldg.
1907 home listed at 8131/2 South I (Eye) Street. Occupation, janitor, California Building.
1908 home listed at 2107 South I (Eye) Street.
1911 Frederick W. Gifford (Edith), 6021 South Cedar.
1912* Frederick W. Gifford, 6021 South Cedar
1912** Mrs. Edith Gifford, 6017 South Cedar
1914 Frederick W. Gifford, 6021 South Cedar
1915 Frederick W. Gifford (Wilhelmina), 2550 S. I (Eye)
1916 Frederick W. Gifford (Wilhelmina), 2550 S. I (Eye)
1917 Frederick W. Gifford, 2550 S. I (Eye)
1918 Frederick W. Gifford (Beulah), 2505 S. I (Eye)
Occupation; Engineer, California, Building.
1920 Frederick W. Gifford (Beulah), 2550 S. I (Eye)
1930 Frederick W. Gifford (Beulah) 3920 N. 24th
(George Arthur & Laura (Lee) Churchill were their neighbors at 4008 N. 24th Street, in 1930)
1931 see above..
This is were I stopped. So, It appears that Edith Gifford must of divorced Fred in about 1912! Doesn't look like she moved far, the first year of the divorce. Then we know (thanks to your research) she re-married and moved with the youngest child, Edith E. Gifford, south.
Fred must of married, the Lady, my Grandmother Amy called "Minnie" (Wilhelmina) possibly 1914, and was married to Wilhelmina in 1915 and 1916. Beulah must of appeared on the time line in 1917 (?) or so. We now know that Beulah was listed as Fred's spouse from 1918 till his death.
I think we can now, pretty safe to document, that Frederick W. Gifford was married four times. Starting with Kate Potter, then Edith, then Wilhelmina and finally, Beulah; the Great Grandmother that I remember as a child.
I will do some more work in the Northwest Room in the future for the Frederick W. Gifford.

Kate Potter

Information from Stan R. Lee

Picture of Kate (Potter) Gifford Revette holding infant, James Gordon Revette. Kate was the first wife of Fredrick Gifford. They divorced sometime in 1910. On March 23, 1910 Kitty married Douglas James Revett. (I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate-King County/Seattle, Washington.) Gordon was born in 1911. So, looking at this picture. I would say the circa is about 1911. Kate Potter died December 11, 1915 in Seattle, Washington due to the TB epidemic. She is buried at the Lakeview Cemetery, in Seattle, Washington.

Kate's parents were Joseph Potter b. 04 August 1837 in Leyland, England, d. 23 August 1905 in Cottam, England. Wife was Anne Law, b. 06 July 1839 in Walton-Le-Dale, England and died 12 July 1889 in Walton-Le-dale, England. They were married May 25, 1863.

Joseph and Ann Law Potter had nine children. Margaret, born 1863 and died Oct 4, 1871 in Preston, England. Samuel Potter born about 1864 in Preston England and died November 30, 1866 in Preston, England. John Potter born 1866 in Preston England, died September 13 1867 in Preston, England. Samuel Potter Died in child birth October 8, 1869, Preston, England. Herbert Potter, born 1871 in Preston, England, died Sept. 3, 1872 in Preston, England. Violet Potter, born July 9, 1873 in Walton-Le-Dale, England, Died, April 24 1951 in Spanaway, WA (Married Thomas Turner (Chris Turner's one of Chris Turner's older brothers), on May 22, 1899. Frank Potter, born 1876 in Over Darwen, England, died 1951. Married a Martha Thwaite. Tom Potter, born 1878 in Over Darwen, England, Died (?) Married "Lilly". Kate "Kitty" Potter, born November 25 1879 in Over Darwen, England. Died December 11, 1915 in Seattle, Washington. Spouses: Fred W. Gifford and Douglas James Revett.

Joesph Potter parents were Edward Potter and Margaret Cardwell. Anne Law parents were James Law and Ann Maudsley.

"Darwen

Darwen dates its history back to Anglo-Saxon times though evidence is scarce, depending mainly on an ancient burial ground uncovered in the Whitehall area. It takes its name from the river which runs through the narrow valley from the south through the town. From the 19th century passing trade giving rise to regular markets in Over Darwen and during the Industrial Revolution the town grew into a booming cotton mill town and by 1911 its population reached around 40,400.
The Borough of Darwen was created in 1877 and remained intact until Local Government reorganisation of 1974 when it became part of the Borough of Blackburn. Currently around 33,000 live in the town. Overlooking the town stands the dominant Jubilee Tower, (locally known as Darwen Tower), built in 1897 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
In 1998 Darwen became part of the new Blackburn with Darwen Unitary Authority which made it completely independent of Lancashire County Council."
